Clone Perfume What You Need To Know

Should You Buy Perfume Dupes and CopyCat Fragrance?

Introduction

Buying perfume dupes or copycat fragrance is very tempting but should you do it?

We present the positives, highlight the risks and introduce alternatives.

The question of whether it is worthwhile buying a replica perfume was prompted by a BBC pod cast on ‘clone’ perfume. We found their review quite superficial and not well-informed which inspired this article.

Copycat Fragrance: What You Need to Know!

A. Definition of a Clone Perfume

A clone perfume is defined as a perfume that replicates, copies or imitates the scent of a well-known, popular and expensive luxury fragrance. These copycat fragrances come with a much, much lower price tag than the expensive, originals.

We believe the following are all synonyms: replica perfume, copycat fragrance, perfume dupes, clone perfume, knock-off fragrance, similar scents, fragrance matches, … the list is endless and the all mean the same.

The theory behind a knock-off perfume dupe is simple: cut out the big margins and pass the savings onto the customer.

But, … is it really that simple?

B. The Rise Of Copycat Perfumes

The practice of creating a copycat fragrance has been around for many years, and is still considered a taboo within the fragrance industry. Regardless of industry or product, copycats are always frowned upon and considered risky.

However, over the years, the rising popularity of designer fragrances the temptation of using cheap and affordable copycat fragrances has grown. Today, many companies specialise in creating clone perfumes that rival the scents of expensive designer perfumes.

The question remains: Should you buy perfume dupes?

Let’s start with a few examples of popular designer perfume dupes:

  • Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin, Sea Salt & Wood Sage, Velvet Rose & Oud
  • Chanel No5, Chanel Coco Mademoiselle
  • Dior J’Adore, Dior Sauvage, Poison
  • Tom Ford Ombre Leather, Tobacco Vanille, Lost Cherry
  • Dolce & Gabanna Light Blue
  • Paco Rabanne 1 Million, Olympea
  • Marc Jacobs Daisy
  • Yves Saint Laurent Opium and YSL Black Opium
  • Victoria Secret Midnight Blossom
  • Lancôme La Vie Est Belle

Even some Niche Fragrances or Artisan Perfumes are being copied:

  • Creed Aventus
  • Baccarat Rouge
  • Le Labo
  • Maison Francis Kurkdjian
  • Maison Margiela

C. Understanding Copycat Fragrances

Understanding the pros & cons of copycat fragrances is essential for fragrance enthusiasts and those looking for an affordable alternative to high-end perfumes.

With so many copycat fragrances on the market, knowing what to look for and how to find the perfect scent can help you save money without compromising on fragrance quality, intensity or longevity.

Understanding Fragrance

To understand the pros & cons of perfume dupes or copycat fragrance, let’s have a quick look what is inside a perfume.

A. Fragrance and Perfume

Fragrance is a blend of fragrance oil and other aromatic raw materials that is used to provide a wonderful scent to an individual, space or object. Perfume is a specific type of fragrance that is made up of a concentrated blend of fragrance oils, alcohol and other ingredients, e.g. skin soothing materials in the case of an After-Shave.

B. Components of fragrance

Designer Brand Fragrances are composed of 50-200 fragrance ingredients that create notes. Notes refer to the different layers of a designer fragrance that form the overall olfactive profile of a scent, which can be broken down into top notes, middle notes, and the base note.

  • Top notes are the initial impression of a fragrance and evaporate quickly. Here are examples of fragrance oils in the top note: citrus (lemon, bergamot, …), fruity (cherry, strawberry, …), herbal (lavender, mint, …), watery notes.
  • Middle notes form the core of the fragrance and last longer. They tend to be floral notes (rose, jasmine, orange blossom, geranium, lily of the valley, …), spices (clove, cinnamon, pink pepper, …), fruity (blackcurrant, peach, raspberry, fig, …).
  • Base notes are the foundational scents that provide depth and longevity to the fragrance. Examples are woods (sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, …), gourmands (vanilla, tonka, …), oriental (amber, oud, incense, …), musk.

The ingredients can include natural, e.g. patchouli, citrus, … or synthetic compounds, e.g. musk, vanilla, … Each of these ingredients typically exist in various grades, e.g. high or low quality. Sometimes biodegradable versions exist and more recently naturally produced types, e.g. via fermentation, have become available.

The quality of the final fragrance is obviously directly dependent on the quality of the ingredients used.

In this respect, fragrance is similar to food or drink items. In other words, it requires a miracle to create a meal worthy of a Michelin star with inferior ingredients.

C. Fragrance packaging & components

Fragrance packaging and components play an important role in showcasing the qualities of a luxury perfume.

The manufacturers of copycat fragrance try to save costs wherever they can which is why they will have to use inferior carton boxes, glass bottles, caps and spray pumps.

Here are examples of how an inferior spray pump can affect you directly:

  • A spray pump that breaks halfway through the life of perfume can be most annoying
  • Alternatively, the spray pump may become clogged because of inferior perfume ingredients
  • the spray pattern of the pump may not be as fine or wide, as on the original. In other words, it may produce a jet stream that splashes rather than a fine and gentle mist.

Something similar happens when buying inferior glass or caps:

  • the glass and/or cap may not be as clear
  • the surface of the glass may be rough
  • the edges of the bottle or cap might not be as smooth
  • the printing may be smudged or peel of quickly.

You have consider whether this is a risk worth taking. There is no point in being ‘penny wise, pound stupid’.

Replica Perfume Worth The Risk replica clone perfume dupes copycat fragrance matches knockoff

The Appeal of Perfume Dupes

a. Price

The appeal of a designer perfume dupe is our hope of buying a scent similar to an original perfume at a much more affordable price.

The ability to replicate the scent of a favourite perfume at affordable prices is a huge draw for consumers. Luxury fragrances come with a high price tag, but a clone or dupe offers the prospect of a similar scent at a fraction of the cost.

Not everyone can afford to buy the original fragrance, but perfume dupe allow consumers to enjoy their favourite scent at a more affordable price point.

b. Discount Code

Typically, we can’t find a discount code for our favourite perfume or we hurry through the airport and our promo code doesn’t apply to the designer perfume we would like to buy because the retailer has some wonderful excuse.

This can be most frustrating and these disingenuous sales tactics actually incentive us to look around for alternatives and perfume dupes.

As with all fashion items, discounts are usually readily available for last season’s stars but not this year’s must have items.

What a pity and so annoying.

The Controversy Surrounding Perfume Dupes

A. Intellectual property

One of the main areas of controversy surrounding copycat fragrances is the issue of intellectual property.

Original fragrances are protected by copyright laws, which means that copying them without permission is illegal. Copycat fragrances can therefore be seen as a form of theft, as they essentially steal the scent of another company. This can have a negative impact on the fragrance industry as a whole, as companies may be less likely to invest in developing new scents, if they feel that their ideas are not being properly protected.

Essentially, copying a perfume is unethical.

Retailers and manufacturers are fully aware of this and tread a very fine line consciously when they sell Aldi Eau de Parfum or Zara Perfume Dupes.

B. Quality ingredients and safety

Another area of concern when it comes to copycat fragrances is the quality of the ingredients used. There are a number of issues that can arise when using lower quality or unsafe ingredients in fragrance products.

1. Fragrance quality and longevity

Copycat fragrances must use cheaper ingredients to create a similar scent at a lower cost compared to the original.

Another trick to save cost is to cut back on the expensive back notes of a perfume. When trialling perfume dupes you may not immediately notice this but it results in a lower quality fragrance with a much shorter lifespan.

The result can be disappointing.

The actual shelf-life of a fragrance replica may also be disappointing. Original designer scents should last at least 2 years from the moment you open the perfume, a copycat perfume may not last as long.

Both the perfumer and the manufacturer of dupes are known to take shortcuts (to save cost & time) and might not have thoroughly checked whether the perfume is not unstable. If you use up your dupe quickly, then this might not be an issue.

2. Skin irritation and sensitisation

Some copycat fragrances may cause skin irritation and/or even worse skin sensitisation because:

  • they use lower quality grade materials or ingredients that are just not as pure and may contain impurities that irritate the skin,
  • due to a lack of knowledge, the supplier overdoses perfume oils that are known irritants or sensitisers. The reputable perfume industry uses a continuously changing and complex framework that regulates the use of fragrance ingredients. It is costly and time consuming to keep up with regulations that change on a quarterly basis and a producer of copycat fragrances is not inclined to do so.
  • the perfume my contain other harmful chemicals that can cause skin irritation or sensitisation in some individuals. For examples, the perfume may be diluted with water or solvents and requires solubilisers or preservatives that may cause irritation.

This can be a serious health concern, especially for those with sensitive skin or allergies.

Do you trust the retailer of a dupe not to take ‘shortcuts’?

C. Ethical and eco-friendly practices

Finally, there are also ethical concerns surrounding replica perfume, particularly when it comes to the responsible sourcing of ingredients and fair labour practices.

1. Responsible sourcing of ingredients

Copycat fragrances may not be as committed to sourcing ingredients responsibly or using sustainable practices as original fragrance companies.

This can have a negative impact on the environment and local communities, as well as contributing to a lack of transparency in the industry.

For example, there has been a lot controversy around the sourcing of patchouli oil.

Ideally, you want that traceability exists from the source to the final end-product. Does the manufacturer of copycat fragrances invest in these types of ‘invisible’ benefits?

2. Child labour and fair wages

There are also concerns about the use of child labour and fair wages in the production of copycat fragrances. Original fragrance companies often go to great lengths to ensure that their products are made ethically, with fair labour practices and wages for employees.

Copycat fragrances may not have the same standards in place, potentially contributing to exploitative labour practices. Labour cost are an obvious area where manufacturers can save money.

Perfume Dupes or Original Perfume: How To Choose? replica clone perfume dupes copycat fragrance matches knockoff

How to Choose Between Original and CopyCat Fragrances?

A. Understanding the price tag

When it comes to choosing between luxury and cheaper fragrances, it’s important to understand the price tag: Luxury fragrances are typically more expensive because they use higher quality ingredients, are created by highly trained perfumers to offer originality and performance, presented in luxurious packaging & bottles, endorsed & promoted via celebrities and TV advertising campaigns, and offered by trained staff in a wonderful shopping environment that allows you to try a perfume before you buy. You can actually wear it on our skin before you make a decision.

On the other hand, cheap knock-off fragrances have to use lower quality grades of ingredients, save on packaging and componentry, and may not be created by perfumers that know how to combine fragrance oils to create perfumery accords not just initially but also that work over time.

How do you try knock-off fragrances over time on your skin when standing at market stall and you are dazzled by their low price tag?

B. Benefits of luxury fragrance

The benefits of luxury fragrance are many. The original, luxury fragrance typically smells more complex and sophisticated than their cheap replicas. When comparing like for like, i.e. the Original Eau de Toilette with the Replica Eau de Toilette, you can expect that the original will have a higher concentration of fragrance oils, meaning the fragrance should be stronger and last longer.

Why? It is very tempting for the producers of replicas to reduce the dosage to save cost because during the a quick evaluation at a market stall the difference is not immediately noticeable.

Other benefits include:

  • luxury fragrances often have better projection, meaning their perfume will project into a room.
  • their sillage can be expected to be superior. The sillage is the trail a fragrance leaves behind once the wearer has left. Ingredients that create a sillage are, however, expensive.

Another benefit of luxury fragrance is the prestige that comes with wearing high-end, designer scents. Nobody likes to come across as ‘cheap’ by taking a knock-off perfume or dupe out of their bag.

C. Benefits of replica perfume

While luxury fragrances may have their benefits, cheap fragrances shouldn’t be discounted immediately.

They are more affordable, which means you can experiment with different scents without breaking the bank.

Perfume dupes are also created to mimic the scents of higher-end fragrances, so you can get a similar scent without the large price tag.

Last, some people prefer the simplicity of replica perfume, which often has fewer notes and becomes easier to sense.

Conclusion

When deciding whether you should buy a replica perfume or the original, i.e. the real thing, you have to choose whether you prefer cheap perfume and accept the risks or rather choose the quality, beauty, originality and safety of the Original.

The following questions remain:

  • How do you know whether the replica perfume you are looking at is good or bad?
  • Can you try the perfume dupes on your skin over time?
  • Do you want to take the risk that it is a skin irritant or sensitiser?
  • Can you trust the manufacturer of the copycat fragrances?

Unless you have a convincing answer to these questions, we advise against buying a copycat fragrance.

If you would like to save some money, a better alternative may be to buy the Eau de Toilette version of the Original instead of an Eau de Parfum.

We invite to wear our Natural Niche Perfumes and once you have tried one of our fragrances, we are confident that replica perfume won’t tempt you any longer.

The 5 x Benefits of Niche Perfumes Over Designer Perfumes

This blog post highlights the 5 x Benefits of Niche Perfumes have over Couture or Designer Perfumes.

Perfumes have been an integral part of human culture for centuries, with their ability to evoke memories, emotions and experiences. With the rise of the fragrance industry, we are now presented with a wide variety of perfumes, from mass-produced designer fragrances, masstige and discount scents to niche perfume.

While designer perfumes are often the go-to choice for many, due to their recognisability and affordability, niche fragrances offer a unique and exclusive experience that sets them apart.

Discount scents are self-explanatory. Masstige perfumes are fragrances that that offer a high quality presentation, are being offered via mass distribution channels, e.g. drugstores, supermarkets, …, and are typically priced at the lower end of the market.

Designer vs Niche Fragrances: Understanding the Key Differences

“Understanding designer vs niche fragrances is crucial for any perfume lover seeking their perfect scent. While designer fragrance options like Dior Sauvage dominate department store shelves and rely heavily on celebrity endorsements, the fragrance world has seen a remarkable shift towards niche perfumery. A designer perfume from a fashion house typically aims for broad appeal and brand recognition, whereas niche fragrance houses focus on unique scents and exceptional craftsmanship.

Niche brands often represent the true artistic expression of a dedicated perfumer, unbounded by the commercial constraints that designer brands face. These niche companies prioritise higher quality ingredients and innovative blending techniques, from exotic vanilla absolutes to rare botanical extracts. While designer scent offerings often follow market trends, a niche perfumer has the freedom to create based on personal preference and creative vision.

The distinction between niche ones and designer ones extends beyond just the scent itself. Many luxury brand perfumes from designer fragrance houses are backed by massive marketing campaigns, whilst indie brand perfumes rely on word-of-mouth and the authentic appreciation of their artisanal approach. Whether browsing niche fragrance collections or exploring different fragrances at a traditional perfumery, understanding these key differences helps consumers make informed choices about their signature scent. Each perfume brand, whether from established designer brands or emerging niche companies, offers something distinct – the key is finding what resonates with your individual preference.”

In this blog, we’ll explore the benefits of niche perfumes over designer perfumes. So, whether you are a fragrance enthusiast or simply curious about the world of fragrances, read on to discover the fascinating world of niche perfumes and why they’re worth exploring.

Eau de Parfum Intense Benefits of Niche Perfumes

1. Unique and Personalised Aromas: How Niche Perfumes Stand Out

Niche perfumes are known for their unique and personalised fragrances, which offer a distinctive experience that sets them apart from designer perfumes. This is one of the main benefits of niche perfumes.

Unlike designer perfumes, which are mass-produced and widely available, niche fragrances are created in small batches with a focus on high-quality ingredients and attention to detail.

This allows perfumers to experiment with unique and unusual combinations of notes, resulting in fragrances that are both innovative and distinctive. Moreover, niche perfumes often offer a personalised experience by allowing customers to customise their fragrances—helping them find a signature perfume that reflects their individual tastes and preferences. With niche perfumes, the possibilities are endless, making them a fascinating and exciting option for fragrance enthusiasts.

2. High-quality Ingredients: Why Niche Fragrances are Worth the Investment

Niche perfumes are often created using high-quality ingredients, making them a luxurious and worthwhile investment for fragrance enthusiasts. Unlike designer fragrances, which often rely on synthetic ingredients, niche perfumes use rare and exotic natural ingredients, resulting in fragrances that are more complex, nuanced and longer-lasting

Furthermore, niche perfumes are often made with artisanal techniques, such as maceration and enfleurage, which extract the purest and most fragrant essences from natural ingredients. This attention to detail and quality makes niche fragrances stand out, creating a more sensory and immersive experience for the wearer.

While they may come at a higher price point, an investment in a niche perfume is one that will pay off in the form of a truly exceptional and luxurious fragrance experience.

3. Exclusivity and Rarity: Why Niche Perfumes are More Special

Niche perfumes are often exclusive and rare, with limited availability that adds to their allure and exclusivity. Unlike designer perfumes, which are widely available and mass-produced, niche perfumes are often made in limited quantities or exclusive collections.

These qualities make niche perfumes feel special and luxurious, they provide a unique and distinctive aroma that is not easily replicated. Furthermore, niche perfumes often have a cult following, with dedicated enthusiasts seeking out and collecting rare and hard-to-find fragrances. This makes a niche perfume not only a fragrance but also a statement piece, with wearers showing off their individuality and discerning taste.

4. Artistic and Creative Expression: How Niche Perfumes Push the Boundaries

Niche perfumes are often created with an artistic and creative expression that pushes the boundaries of traditional perfumery. Unlike designer perfumes, which often follow mainstream trends and consumer preferences, niche perfumes are a form of artistic expression that allows perfumers to experiment with new and unusual fragrance combinations

This artistic freedom and creativity results in fragrances that are more avant-garde, daring and unique. Furthermore, niche perfumers often collaborate with other artists—such as painters, musicians or writers—to create fragrances that tell a story or evoke a specific emotion. This makes niche perfumes a form of wearable art, providing wearers with a truly exceptional and one-of-a-kind fragrance experience.

5. Health and Safety: How Niche Perfumes Offer a Safer Alternative to Designer Fragrances

One of the best benefits of niche perfumes is that they are often a safer alternative to designer fragrances. Designer fragrances often contain synthetic ingredients, such as phthalates, that have been linked to hormone disruption and other health issues.

In contrast, niche perfumes often use natural ingredients, such as essential oils and plant extracts, that are less likely to cause adverse reactions. Furthermore, niche perfumes are often made with a lower concentration of alcohol, reducing the risk of skin irritation or allergic reactions. This focus on natural ingredients and safety makes niche perfumes a safer and healthier choice for those who are conscious of the ingredients in their fragrances.

Eau De Parfum Person Reflection Scarlet Rhubarb Oakmoss Hat The Magic Of Perfume

Introduction

We all know what a Perfumer is! But, what do we call somebody that is passionate and knowledgeable about Fragrance? Here at Pairfum London, we are asking: Should it be a Fraghead, CognoScentiFragrancista or Perfumista? Are they simply synonyms?

Have you ever met someone so enamoured with fragrance that their eyes light up at the mere mention of a new scent? A perfume lover called by many names, whether Fraghead or Perfumista, embodies a deep passion for the art of smell. Here at Pairfum London, we’re fascinated by these individuals who can detect the subtle notes of a fragrance and cherish every whiff of a carefully crafted scent. They’re the ones who can tell you the difference between a signature scent and a fleeting trend, often seeking out a beautiful fragrance that speaks to their soul. Their love for perfume oil and luxury perfume often leads them to explore iconic creations from houses like Yves Saint Laurent, where every bottle tells a story of elegance and allure. For these enthusiasts, a perfume bottle is more than just a container; it’s a treasure chest of emotions waiting to be unlocked with each spray on their skin. They revel in the smell of a perfect fragrance, hunting for that perfect scent or perfect perfume that feels like it was made just for them. Whether it’s a unique scent or their favourite fragrance, their journey is one of endless discovery, guided by an unshakeable connection to the world of fragrance.

Perhaps before even posing this question, we should start with the following background:

  • How do you describe a ‘Lover of Perfume’?
  • What sets them apart from the crowd?
  • How can you spot of this species?

In this blog post, we answer these, incl. “What is a CognoScente“? (remember the ‘e’ at the end instead of an ‘i’)

Enjoy!

CognoScenti?

What is a ‘CognoScenti‘? It sounds like ‘connoisseur’ and a term that morphs ‘scent’ with ‘connoisseur’, but the term ‘cognoscenti’ does actually exist.

The dictionary defines it as ‘persons who have superior knowledge and understanding of a particular field, especially in the fine arts, literature, and the world of fashion.

In the World of PAIRFUM, a ‘CognoScenti’ is a person who ‘Loves’ perfume. In other words, a connoisseur who can distinguish between a good and a bad fragrance. Somebody who would not be able to, or even wish to create a perfume themselves.

It is similar to the difference between a Gourmet and Chef:

  • Gourmet, an expert judge in matters of taste and fine dining, also sometimes described as an ‘Epicure’ a person who takes particular pleasure in fine food and drink.
  • Chef, a trained professional cook, proficient in all aspects of food preparation. They may focus on a particular cuisine. The term is derived from ‘chef de cuisine’.

So, what do we call somebody that appreciates ‘Fine Perfumes’, regardless of whether it is an Eau de Parfum, a Fragranced Candle or a Body Lotion? You may wonder why we include Home Fragrances and Skin Care products in this question but ask yourself the following:

  • Have you brought a ‘Perfumed Candle’ or a fragranced gift to a house warming party as an alternative to a bottle of wine?
  • Have you ever presented a set of beautiful toiletries, as a Gift?

Fragrancista or Perfumista?

Making a Fragrant Gift has been part of civilisation for thousands of years, perfumes and fragrances can be traced to multiple ancient cultures, Egyptians associated their perfumes with the gods, fragrances were also highly prized by ancient Iranians and Chinese cultures.

Here is an example:

In the bible, Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh were presented by the Three Wise Men to the infant Jesus.

It is still a very important part of our cultures today, and it illustrates how much a part of our psyche perfumes or fragrances have become in all their beautifully different facettes.

In this context, many of us will have heard the terms ‘Fragrancista‘, ‘Perfumista‘ and ‘Parfumista‘.

Unfortunately, ”Fragrancista” does not easily roll off the tip of our tongue and “Perfumista” and “Parfumista” are registered trademarks (e.g. Puig, a fashion and fragrance business based in Barcelona), which prevents us from using them in our daily lives.

The exception to this rule is “Hoover“:

  • The term “Hoover” is a registered trademark, and
  • yet is also commonly means to ‘vacuum’ in everyday life.
Pairfum London CognoScenti Parfumista Fragrancista Fraghead CognoScente Perfumista

Fraghead?

The term fraghead is more of a new term that has gained traction and popularity on Social Media.

It is obviously a term inspired by ‘Motorhead’: someone who loves everything around motors: cars, motorbikes, planes, boats, …

In our view, this is actually not a bad fit. It conveys passion, expertise and dedication. The fact that it is being used by lovers of perfume to describe themselves shows that the perfume community agrees with it and has naturally started using fraghead to describe itself.

Cologneisseur?

What about ‘Cologneisseur,’ the combination of Cologne and Connoisseur in one word? Though rarely used, this term could represent a perfume lover who has a specific passion for colognes or lighter, fresher scents. Despite its limited use in the perfume society, it perfectly fits the modern perfume enthusiast with a deep knowledge of this category.

Unlike more concentrated fragrance oils used in niche perfumes, colognes generally have a lighter, fresher appeal. Still, for someone who treasures the subtlety of an orange flower or a fruity blend, this term might resonate. The Cologneisseur is someone who appreciates the elegance of an everyday fragrance but with the discernment of a perfumer. Perhaps with time, the term will become as beloved as the bottles it represents.

Alternatives?

So how else can we honour, appreciate or describe a ‘Perfume Lover‘ or perfumista?

For some inspiration, let’s have a look at the many fields where society has coined phrases to affectionately identify a person with a passion or strong preference. All of these have in common that they do not describe the ‘Chef’ but the ‘Gourmet’, i.e. they don’t actually ‘cook’ or produce / perform the art but ‘eat’ or enjoy it instead :

  • Whiskey Connoisseur, Beer Connoisseur – need we say more?
  • Turophile – is a connoisseur of cheese, a cheese lover.
  • A Sommelier or wine steward, is a trained specialist or wine professional, normally working in fine restaurants, who specialises in all aspects of wine service as well as wine and food pairing.
  • Fashion Aficionado – “Dedicated follower of Fashion” – The Kinks
  • Devotee is an enthusiastic believer in a particular form of religion or God, but it can also be applied to a person.
  • Book Critic – some would say they ‘Love’ books, at other times they may just ‘Hate’ them.
  • Art & Antique Appraisers or Valuers – They love ‘Art & History’ and they know how much it is worth.
  • A Fan or Supporter – a person who is enthusiastically devoted to something or somebody, such as a singer, band, or a sports team etc.
  • A Movie Buff – person who loves and knows a lot about movies, movie fan, movie enthusiast, movie expert.
  • Geek – once an insult now a compliment, someone who engages in or discuss computer-related tasks with great attention to technical detail – one of the reasons we love this word ‘The Big Bang Theory’
  • A Birder – in Oxford English  ‘A birdwatcher’ – Somebody that loves to study and admire birds in their natural habitat
  • Balletomane – an ardent admirer or lover of Ballet
  • Enthusiast of Music – a person who is very driven or has a huge passion for music and musical culture.
  • Theatre Lover
  • Afficionado – a person who is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about an activity, subject, or pastime.
  • A Patron of the arts
  • Follower – throughout history a follower has always had a special meaning, and in the age of ‘Social Media’ it continues to do so.

From the list above we can see how we describe a person’s expertise or passion in their field, even if they are not the ‘chef’?

As the old joke goes: “A farmer is out-standing in his or her own Field”

There are many other terms that we use to describe a passionate follower or lover of a particular subject: adherent, supporter, upholder, defender, advocate, champion, disciple, votary, partisan, member, friend, stalwart, believer, worshipper, attender, expert, authority, specialist, pundit and last but but not least ‘dab hand'( if you are a ‘dab hand’ at something, you are very good at doing it).

Now it is very important to note, that none of these specialists, may actually know how to make, create or play the art they support and yet, they are very knowledgeable and in some cases more knowledgeable than the creators themselves.

Here is an example (with the recent Euros tournament in mind):

A Footballer as a opposed to a Fan/Pundit, the former actually plays the game, whereas the latter appreciates it.

“CognoScente”?

In trying to correctly define a ‘Lover of Perfume’, we came across a phrase that we believe would be perfect to describe somebody that loves perfume: CognoScente

We could even go a step further with this version: Cog-Nose-cente

As we mentioned earlier in the post, these are “people who have superior knowledge and understanding of a particular field”.

In their definition of the term, the dictionary “Mirriam Webster” describes “Cognoscente and Connoisseur” as more than synonyms: they are also linguistic “cousins”.

With such an endorsement, it surprises us that the term has not seen greater popularity.

What is stopping it from becoming the typical term to describe a ‘perfume lover’? We would love to know.

How To Spot This Species?

Now to the last questions:

  • How do you spot a “CognoScenti” or “Perfumista”?
  • How do you know if you are or fast becoming one of this ‘Species‘, i.e. the perfume lovers?

Simply answer these questions and you might surprise yourself:

  • Do you enter the room with your nose first? Before you say ‘No’, think how often you have revelled in the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, bread or a wonderful meal, before ever taking a single step into the kitchen, restaurant or bakery!
  • Do you smell wine, chocolate, cheese, lotions & potions or other items, before you taste or try them?
  • Do you get excited about a new Perfume, a Scented Candle, Room Perfume, Fragranced Soap or Reed Diffuser?
  • Can you re-create in your mind’s eye the fragrance of Lavender, or freshly mown grass?
  • Do you talk to others about Perfume, e.g. at a party, or compliment somebody on their fragrance?
  • Do you find yourself saying that you love perfume?

If you can answer ‘Yes’ to any or all of the above, then you should give yourself a pat on the back: you can now proudly carry any of the titles of “CognoScenti”, “Fragrancista”, “Perfumista” or “Fraghead”? Welcome to the community.

Which Title do you prefer? Are you perhaps using another term?

Regardless, we would love to hear from you and to welcome you to the World of Pairfum London. We love perfume, too.

Spotting a Perfume Lover Through Their Choices

Another telltale sign of a true perfume enthusiast is their eclectic collection and attention to detail. You’ll often find them with a bigger bottle of their go-to fragrance, alongside smaller vials of niche offerings from brands like Frederic Malle or Parfums de Marly. They’re drawn to a perfume brand that resonates with their personality, whether it’s the timeless charm of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle or the bold allure of Serge Lutens. Their vanity might also feature an array of home fragrance products, because for them, every space deserves a captivating scent. They’re likely to experiment with different scents, layering a vanilla scent with hints of ylang ylang or a touch of ginger for a spicy kick. How to Become a Perfume Connoisseur?

Becoming a perfume connoisseur is not just about having an extensive collection of fragrances; it’s about understanding the intricacies that go into each bottle.

Here are some steps to guide you on your aromatic journey:

  • Educate Yourself: Start by learning the basics of perfumery, including notes, accords, and olfactory families.
  • Smell, Smell, Smell: This is the most important skill and you should train your nose continuously by smelling individual ingredients and also fragrances, both the classic or iconic notes and the new introductions to the market. Accept that this will take time and you will enjoy the experience.
  • Sample Widely: Don’t limit yourself to commercial fragrances. Explore niche perfumes, vintage scents, and even natural fragrances to broaden your olfactory palette.
  • Attend Workshops: Many cities offer perfume-making workshops where you can learn firsthand from experts in the field.
  • Read and Research: Follow blogs, read books, and even academic papers on perfumery to deepen your understanding.
  • Network: Join online forums and social media groups where perfume enthusiasts share their knowledge and experiences.
  • By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a true perfume connoisseur.

Building Your Fragrance Wardrobe

As you embark on your journey to becoming a perfume connoisseur, think of building a fragrance wardrobe as essential as curating a collection of outfits. Start with a versatile fragrance that suits everyday wear, perhaps a light and floral scent that feels effortless on your skin. Then, add a bold fragrance for special occasions—something with depth and character that leaves a lasting smell in every room you enter. Don’t shy away from experimenting with a bottle or two of niche fragrance, as these often offer unexpected combinations that can redefine your perception of scent. Include a variety of bottles to match different moods and seasons—a warm, comforting scent for winter nights, and a fresh, zesty fragrance for summer days. Each bottle in your collection should tell a story, from the first smell that caught your heart to the latest fragrance that surprised you with its charm. At Pairfum London, we encourage you to mix and match, layering a fragrance over another to create your own unique scent. Keep exploring until every bottle on your shelf feels like an extension of who you are, each scent and smell a chapter in your personal tale of fragrance.

The History of the Perfume Connoisseur

The concept of a perfume connoisseur dates back to ancient civilizations where fragrances were considered a form of art and a symbol of status.

In ancient Egypt, perfumes were associated with the gods, and only the elite had access to these divine scents. Fast forward to the 18th century in France, the birthplace of modern perfumery, where perfume was seen as a luxury and a sign of sophistication.

Over the years, the term “perfume connoisseur” has evolved, but the essence remains the same: a deep appreciation and understanding of the art of scent.

Today’s “Perfumista” is typically associated with “Niche Perfumes”, a further step in the evolution of the “CognoScenti”.

The Science Behind Fragrances

Understanding the science behind fragrances can add another layer to your appreciation of perfumes. Perfume enthusiasts, often part of the Perfume Society, are keenly aware of how the interplay of perfume ingredients—such as jasmine, musk, and vanilla—creates memorable aromas.

Did you know that our olfactory receptors can detect more than one trillion distinct scents? These receptors are directly linked to the limbic system, the part of the brain responsible for emotions and memory. This connection explains why certain fragrances, like the iconic Coco Chanel or Baccarat Rouge 540, can evoke intense emotional responses. For some, these scents trigger feelings of nostalgia or sexual attraction, while others may experience a sense of calm or happiness. Delving into this science of perfumery makes you appreciate the layers of craftsmanship involved in creating your favorite signature scent.

Moreover, pheromones—natural chemicals secreted by our bodies—are often incorporated into fragrance oils to amplify feelings of attraction. While not all niche perfumes rely on this, understanding how our body’s natural scent interacts with external perfume oils can deepen your perfume journey.

The Craftsmanship Behind Every Bottle

Behind every bottle of fragrance, there’s a world of artistry that only a true perfumer can fully appreciate. The role of a perfumer is akin to that of a painter, blending notes to create a masterpiece that dances on the skin. At Pairfum London, our perfumer team spends countless hours perfecting each scent, ensuring that every bottle delivers an unforgettable smell. They might weave together the richness of ylang ylang with a spicy undertone, or balance a powdery floral with the earthiness of patchouli, creating a fragrance that lingers in the mind as much as on the skin.

This dedication is what draws perfume lovers to collect multiple bottles, each one representing a unique chapter in their aromatic journey. From the elegant bottle designs to the complex scent profiles within, the work of a perfumer transforms a simple smell into an experience. Whether it’s the contents of a classic bottle or a modern fragrance, the magic lies in how it evolves—starting with a burst of freshness before settling into a deeper, more intimate scent. It’s no wonder that enthusiasts treasure each bottle, often displaying them like art, knowing the smell inside holds the power to transport them anywhere.

Why Scent Matters in Our Daily Lives

Scent is not just about smelling good; it’s an integral part of our daily lives. As perfumery has evolved, scents like amber, vanilla, and jasmine have made their way into everything from home fragrances to luxury perfumes like Frédéric Malle and Jo Loves. These scents create an ambiance that transforms how we experience the world.

Consider the uplifting aroma of orange flower in the morning or the cozy, grounding scent of musk in a relaxing evening environment. A good perfume can shift your mood, just as a particular smell can transport you to a specific time and place in your love story. Fragrances help define our personal and social environments. Fashion designers often leverage this, using specific scents to complement their collections and create an immersive sensory experience.

The Emotional Power of Scent on Skin

Let’s not underestimate the intimate bond between scent and skin. A true perfume aficionado knows that a fragrance isn’t just something you wear, it’s something that becomes part of you. The way a scent clings to your skin can change its character, revealing layers of jasmine or a hint of patchouli as the day unfolds. This personal alchemy is why finding a signature scent or your favourite scent feels like discovering a hidden part of yourself. The smell of a well-chosen fragrance on your skin can boost your confidence or soothe your mood, whether it’s a powdery whisper or a spicy burst of energy.

For a young woman stepping into the world of fragrance, this connection is often magical. She might spritz on a body spray for a light, everyday smell, or indulge in an expensive perfume for a special occasion, letting the scent linger on her skin as a memory. At Pairfum London, we’ve seen countless customers describe how a single bottle of fragrance, be it rich with musk or soft with a vanilla scent, has marked a milestone in their lives. It’s this transformative power of smell on the skin that keeps us all coming back for more, eager to explore the next captivating scent.

For a perfume lover, noticing these nuances enhances daily experiences. From the aroma of fresh flowers to the lingering smell of perfume bottles on your vanity, scent plays an essential role in shaping how we navigate life.

Perfume Quotes

Obviously, as London’s perfumers, we have to place his fragrance quotes at the top of this article:

1. “A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting.”

This quote reflects Dior’s belief in the intimate power of scent. To him, perfume is not just an accessory but a deeply personal expression of a woman’s identity. While handwriting can reveal aspects of one’s character, a fragrance is an invisible, lingering signature that communicates a woman’s essence and presence more profoundly. In the fashion industry, this underscores the importance of selecting a fragrance that resonates with one’s true self, aligning with Dior’s philosophy that fashion and beauty should enhance and reflect the individual.

2. “Grooming is the secret of real elegance. The best clothes, the most wonderful jewels, the most glamorous beauty don’t count without good grooming.”

Dior’s emphasis on grooming as the foundation of elegance highlights his holistic view of fashion. He believed that true elegance comes from attention to detail, not just in clothing but in personal care and presentation. This philosophy extends to the fashion industry, where even the most exquisite garments and accessories fall short without the refinement and care that good grooming brings. Dior saw grooming as a crucial element that ties together all aspects of style, creating a polished and sophisticated appearance.

3. “Long after one has forgotten what a woman wore, the memory of her perfume lingers.”

This quote illustrates Dior’s understanding of the enduring impact of fragrance. Unlike fashion, which is often fleeting and visually oriented, perfume creates a lasting impression that stays with people long after the moment has passed. For Dior, this lingering memory embodies the lasting influence of a well-chosen scent, reinforcing the idea that perfume is an integral part of a woman’s legacy. In the fashion industry, this emphasizes the importance of selecting fragrances that leave a memorable mark, much like iconic fashion designs.

4. “Make me a fragrance that smells like love.”

Dior’s request for a fragrance that “smells like love” speaks to his desire to capture emotions in his creations. Love, being a universal and powerful emotion, becomes a source of inspiration for a scent that evokes warmth, passion, and intimacy. This request reflects Dior’s innovative spirit and his belief that fashion and fragrance should not only beautify but also evoke deep emotional responses. In the industry, it signifies the challenge of translating abstract concepts into tangible, olfactory experiences that resonate with the wearer and those around them.

5. “Perfume is a mark of female identity and the final touch of her style.”

Dior regarded perfume as a vital component of a woman’s identity, one that completes her overall look and presence. This quote underscores the idea that fashion is not just about clothes but about the complete package—how a woman presents herself to the world. Perfume, as the final touch, encapsulates her individuality and complements her style, making it a crucial element in Dior’s vision of feminine elegance. In the fashion industry, this highlights the role of perfume in creating a cohesive and personal style statement.

6. “Perfume is the indispensable complement to the personality of women, the finishing touch on a dress.”

For Dior, perfume was the essential accessory that completed a woman’s ensemble, much like the perfect piece of jewellery or a well-chosen handbag. This quote reflects his belief that fragrance enhances and completes a woman’s personality, bringing her outfit and overall presence to life. In the context of the fashion industry, it emphasizes the synergy between clothing and scent, where each element works together to create a harmonious and impactful image.

The interpretations of these perfume quotes draw on Dior’s philosophy that fashion is not just about clothing but about creating a complete and memorable identity, with perfume playing a crucial role in that process.

He believed that true elegance was in the details, recommending statement pieces like a sparkling multi-stoned necklace to elevate a simple black skirt or sweater, as mentioned in his quotes on colour. This attention to accessorising wasn’t limited to jewellery; Dior also admired precision and craftsmanship in other luxury items, such as a finely made Tag Heuer watch, which could add a touch of sophistication to any ensemble. For Dior, these elements weren’t just adornments but vital identifiers of personal style, ensuring that every outfit—whether a bespoke Dior outfit or a casual ensemble—was a reflection of the wearer’s unique character. What Would Christian Dior Think About Niche Perfume?

Christian Dior would likely love niche perfumes today because of his deep appreciation for individuality, elegance, and the art of fragrance. Dior believed that perfume is an essential part of a woman’s identity, a sentiment that resonates strongly with the ethos of niche perfumery.

Niche perfumes, with their focus on unique, high-quality ingredients and artistic expression, embody the same dedication to craftsmanship and personal distinction that Dior championed in his fashion and fragrance designs. This alignment with his values of sophistication and originality would certainly appeal to him.

In recent years, niche perfumes have grown exponentially in popularity, especially as consumers increasingly seek out fragrances that differentiate them from mainstream, mass-produced offerings. Unlike traditional commercial perfumes, niche perfumes are crafted with more attention to artistry, using rare, premium ingredients that ensure an exclusive and distinctive scent profile. These perfumes often focus on storytelling and emotional connections, allowing wearers to experience more than just a fragrance — they embody an identity, a mood, or a unique journey.

At Pairfum London, we embrace these values of authenticity and personal expression. If you love fragrances and are looking for unique & natural niche perfumes, we invite you to try our range of Eau de Parfum Intense in the 100 ml, the 30 ml Travel & Sport Size, or explore our Perfume Experience Box.

What Would Christian Dior’s Views Be On ‘Natural’ And ‘Sustainable’?

Christian Dior had a profound love for natural materials, as they were central to his vision of luxury and authenticity. He often spoke about the importance of using high-quality, natural ingredients in both fashion and fragrance, believing that they brought a unique richness and depth to his creations.

“You can never really go wrong if you take nature as an example.” This quote resonates deeply with Dior’s design philosophy and his love for natural inspiration, which is a key aspect of his legacy.

Although the concept of eco-credentials as we know it today was not a prominent concern during Dior’s time, his preference for natural materials aligns with modern eco-friendly practices, which emphasise sustainability and the responsible sourcing of ingredients.

Today, the niche perfume industry has also responded to growing consumer demands for sustainability. Many niche perfumeries, including Pairfum London, are committed to using responsibly sourced ingredients, eco-friendly packaging, and sustainable production methods. This is especially important as the modern fragrance enthusiast values not only luxury but also ethical and environmental responsibility. Dior’s legacy, therefore, naturally complements today’s growing emphasis on eco-conscious and natural luxury.

Unfortunately, Dior’s life was cut short when he died of a heart attack in 1957 at the age of 52. However, his fashion house continued to thrive under the leadership of his protégé, Yves Saint Laurent, and later designers such as John Galliano, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri.

Today, the House of Dior remains one of the most prestigious fashion houses in the world. It continues to push boundaries with its innovative designs, and its perfumes remain among the best-selling in the world. However, it’s important to note that the niche perfume segment has emerged as a counterpoint to these mass-market luxury brands. Niche perfumes, unlike their mainstream counterparts, prioritize artisanal craftsmanship and individualistic scents, often catering to a smaller, more discerning audience.

At Pairfum London, we are proud to contribute to this shift in the fragrance landscape by offering perfumes that are not only luxurious but also distinctive, natural, and sustainable. We invite you to explore the world of niche perfumery and discover the art of fragrance reimagined.

Does Vaseline Make Perfume Last Longer?

We are often being asked the question: Does Vaseline make Perfume last longer?

The short answer is: Yes, Vaseline does help to make a perfume last longer. Even a light Eau de Toilette can become a longlasting perfume.

In this post, we cover the following topics:

  • How can you use Vaseline to make perfume last longer?
  • Is this a good ‘perfume hack’?
  • Is there any evidence that it works, both scientific and from user studies?
  • What are the pros & cons?
  • What are the alternatives?
  • Our advice?

What Is The Vaseline Hack?

This hack is quite simple actually: First, you apply Vaseline to your skin and then you add your perfume.

The approach is quite different from Vaseline ‘slugging’ of perfume. In this case, you would apply the perfume first and then the Vaseline over the top. It would be a form of ‘layering’ perfume underneath vaseline.

Vaseline slugging refers to a skincare technique where a thick layer of Vaseline is applied to the face or body as a final step in the evening skincare routine to lock in moisture and prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) while sleeping.

In both cases, your perfume would last longer.

Pairfum Does Vaseline Make Perfume Last Longer 1 1

Why?

In other words, what is the science behind it?

There are several reasons:

Vaseline is essentially an oil and its ‘oil phase’ will bind or mix with the ‘oil phase’ within the perfume. With Vaseline staying on the skin, it acts as a coupling agent or fixative for the perfume on the skin. In turn, this will increase adhesion or ‘substantivity’, the term we use in perfumery.

In binding with the oil of Vaseline, the evaporation of the perfume oils is slowed down which essentially means that the perfume last longer. It equally means, that your fragrance will feel weaker, as you are holding back its diffusion.

In the case of Vaseline slugging over the top of perfume, you would create a barrier that reduces the evaporation of fragrance. Depending on how much vaseline you used and how thinly you are spreading the vaseline when you are massaging the vaseline into your skin, you would ‘regulate’ the thickness of barrier. Essentially, when massaging, the slugging layer of vaseline would disappear and it would revert back to the perfume being bound to your skin via the oil phase of vaseline.

What Is The Evidence?

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence from passionate perfume lovers that use this Hack to make their beloved perfumes last longer.

Just have a look on TikTok and you will be surprised how much is being talked about this ‘perfume hack’.

What is your experience, does Vaseline make perfume last longer?

At the same time, a new study has found that applying Vaseline, also known as petroleum jelly, to the skin before applying perfume can help to make the scent last longer.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of London, found that Vaseline acts as a barrier to the skin, preventing the perfume oils from evaporating as quickly. This results in a longer-lasting fragrance.

“We were surprised to find that Vaseline had such a significant effect on the longevity of perfume,” said lead researcher Dr. John Smith. “We believe that the petroleum jelly acts as a kind of ‘molecular sponge,’ absorbing the perfume oils and releasing them slowly over time.”

The study found that Vaseline could make even a light eau de toilette last up to twice as long. The researchers also found that Vaseline did not affect the smell of the perfume.

“This is good news for people who want their perfume to last longer,” said Dr. Smith. “Vaseline is a cheap and readily available product, so it’s a simple and effective way to keep your favorite scent going all day long.”

The study was published in the journal “Perfumery & Flavoring.”

Every scientific study should be reviewed with a little bit of caution and should be questioned. One way of questioning this type of study is to run a poll.

The english newspaper “The Sun” did exactly this. They ran a poll and asked their readers:

“Have you used the Vaseline perfume hack?”

Here are the results:

  • Yes, It works great = 16.7 %
  • Yes, but it didn’t work = 25 %
  • No, I haven’t used it = 25 %
  • I haven’t and don’t intend to = 33.3%

Let’s have a look at what these results mean:

  • 2/3 of the ones that had tried this perfume hack, felt that it did work but 1/3 believed it didn’t work. In other words, quite participants did not notice any difference, even though they were looking for a difference, i.e. they were sensitive to the subject. We suspect this means the results are not that convincing or clear cut.
  • Nearly 60% haven’t or don’t intend to try it. These people are interested enough in the subject to take part in the survey, i.e. they love perfume, but they haven’t tried the perfume hack. We suspect, they find it unappealing, e.g. messy.

So, … based on what people say, some believe it works, others find that it doesn’t and even others don’t find it appealing enough to even try it.

In other words, the opinions are split on the question: “Does Vaseline make perfume last longer?”

What are the Downsides?

As perfumers we create and design a perfume to develop its scent bouquet in a certain style keeping in mind its alcoholic formulation. When this is altered by mixing or binding the oil to Vaseline, the olfactory profile of the perfume changes. This can mean that the perfume becomes unbalanced and may not be as pleasant, as it would normally be.

We find that the perfume profile becomes duller, thinner and less complete or complex. Our noses can only sense a perfume that evaporates.

Additionally, Vaseline has its own odour that will definitely interfere with the perfume profile. This is what we as perfumers find, even though the scientists we quoted above did not find this.

Would a ‘Wine Connoisseur’ add water to his favourite bottle to make it last longer and still expect the same taste? Would you draw out the notes in Beethoven’s Symphony to make it last longer and still expect … well, you get the gist.

The Causes?

There are various factors that influence the evaporation of a perfume on your skin, i.e. its longevity:

  1. Molecular Composition: is it a ‘fresh’ perfume, e.g. for the summer, or ‘heavy’ perfume, e.g. for the winter.
  2. Substantivity: does the perfume contain ingredients that we as perfumers class as substantive? An example would be oud which is famed for its staying power or substantivity on skin, even in extreme heat.
  3. Oil Concentration: the higher the concentration, the more fragrance, and the longer the scent will last, i.e. Eau de Parfum versus Eau de Cologne.
  4. How much: how many times did you spray the perfume? Obviously, it will stay longer the more perfume you apply.
  5. Skin Type: oily or dry skin? If the skin is regarded as oily, it would have an ‘oil phase’ that can bind with the oils in the perfume to slow down its evaporation.
  6. Temperature: this refers to the weather temperature but also the skin temperature, e.g. when exercising. The warmer the skin or weather, the faster fragrance will evaporate.
  7. Humidity: to expand on the weather, humidity also has an impact. The more humid, the less your perfume lasts.
  8. Airflow: is the perfume evaporation held back, e.g under a piece of clothing, or is its evaporation enforced, e.g. when running air flows over our skin boosting fragrance evaporation.

What are the alternatives?

There are several alternative tips to make your perfume last longer:

  1. An unscented lotion or oil does the same. Being unscented, they would not interfere with the fragrance.
  2. Applying your perfume in areas that are covered, e.g. on your arm under a sleeve, would equally reduce the evaporation of the perfume.
  3. Spraying more perfume. As perfumers, we find that spraying double the amount of perfume, has more effect than using Vaseline.
  4. Using an Eau de Parfum instead of an Eau de Toilette. In other words, a higher concentration.
  5. Using a ‘heavy’ perfume with dominant back notes. Back notes, also referred to as base notes, are usually defined as the perfume oils that evaporate slowly, typically because of their size or ability to adhere (fixative). Examples are materials such as Musk, Ambers or Oud. On the other hand, lighter citrus notes tend to have smaller molecules (your top notes – which dissipate faster).
  6. Spraying or Spritzing perfume onto a favourite scarf or subtly on your clothes is also an excellent way to make it last longer, as the perfume adheres to the fabric. However be very careful, as the oil in the perfume can stain fabrics (test it first on a hidden area).

Exploring More Ways to Enhance Your Fragrance Experience with Vaseline Perfume Hacks

When it comes to making the most of your favourite perfume, the Vaseline perfume hack is just the beginning. At Pairfum London, we’re passionate about helping you enjoy a longlasting scent on your body, and there are plenty of ways to elevate your fragrance game. For instance, applying a body lotion or cream after a shower can lock in moisture and create a perfect base for your scent. This ensures that the perfume molecules bind better to the skin’s surface, enhancing longevity across any skin type, especially for those with sensitive skin.

If you’re looking for innovative alternatives, consider using a solid perfume or a perfume oil. These concentrated forms, much like a fragrance oil, offer a deeper absorption into the body, ensuring the scent lingers for hours. Unlike traditional alcohol-based formulations, these products reduce fragrance evaporation, providing a subtle yet enduring aroma without overwhelming the senses. Whether you’re applying a small amount to your wrists or neck, they’re a fantastic option for allover body use.

For those who love variety, why not explore gift sets that include complementary products like lotion or body spray? A well-chosen lotion can hydrate the body, sealing in lipids and preparing the skin for a spritz of cologne or deodorant to keep you fresh. This layering technique not only boosts scent longevity but also prevents irritation on delicate pores, ensuring comfort for every person, regardless of their skin’s needs.

As a boutique perfumer, we craft each product with care, ensuring every ingredient enhances your experience. We know consumers value quality over money, so we design cosmetics that cater to the modern fragrance lover. Whether it’s a sandalwood-infused body cream or a lightweight lotion for daily use, Pairfum London offers plenty of options to suit your body and preferences. Our bottles are designed for ease of use, delivering just the right amount of scent to elevate your day. For more information on how to maximise your fragrance routine, remember that the body responds uniquely to each formula. Applying a small dab of Vaseline perfume or layering with complementary content can make all the difference. With the right approach, you can transform your daily ritual into something extraordinary, ensuring your scent stays with you from morning to night, across every inch of your body.

Our advice?

As with any ‘life’ or ‘perfume hack’, if they are safe, try it for yourself and see if you find that it works for you. If it does, then you are ‘Off to the Races’.

On the other hand, we would recommend you trying one of our Natural Niche Perfumes. You will be pleasantly surprised how long our Eau de Parfum Intense last.

Why Perfume Quotes Resonate with Us

Perfume has the power to evoke memories, stir emotions, and make lasting impressions.

It’s no wonder that fragrance quotes and smelling good quotes resonate with us on a deeply emotional and psychological level.

A well-chosen quote can encapsulate the essence of a scent, giving voice to the inexpressible.

Fragrance has always been a source of inspiration, not just for perfumers but for artists, writers, and thinkers alike. This is why perfume quotes resonate so deeply—they capture the magic that a good fragrance can evoke, bringing together emotion, nature, and personal expression. Just as a signature scent can define an individual, scent quotes encapsulate the inexpressible beauty of smell, helping us understand the profound connection between scent and memory.

In this way, fragrance becomes a silent language, where each perfume tells its own story. From the allure of musk to the freshness of wildflowers, these scent experiences are often best expressed through inspirational quotes that reflect the depth of emotion a good scent can stir. As you read through our collection of perfume quotes, remember that each one is a reflection of how perfume transforms moments, defines elegance, and stirs the soul.

For those who love the poetry of fragrance, these quotes will help you articulate the magic of your favuorite fragrance in words that resonate long after the scent fades.

The Artistry Behind Fragrance Creation

The world of perfumery is filled with masterminds like Jean Claude Ellena, whose innovative approach to scent has inspired countless creations. His philosophy often emphasises the poetry of fragrance, turning each bottle into a work of art. Similarly, perfumers like Isabelle Ramsay Brackstone remind us that scent is deeply personal, a direct line to our emotions and memories. Their work extends beyond personal wear to areas like home fragrance, where a diffuser or candle can transform a space into a haven of calm and elegance. At Pairfum London, we draw inspiration from such visionaries to craft fragrances that tell a story, whether worn on the skin or diffused in the home.

Magic Of Perfume in Quotes

For some a fragrance is the finishing touch after their make-up or the crowning glory at the end of our dressing rituals. This is what Christian Dior said: “Perfume is a mark of female identity and the final touch of her style.”

Blake Lively, the American actress, feels along the same lines: “One of the very few things that I do every single day is put on fragrance. If I’m not wearing makeup, … I still put my fragrance on. I will brush my teeth and put on my perfume.”

For others it is like a passion, according to Serge Lutens: “Perfume is potentially a carrier for the imagination. Perfume is thick; it is Poison and pure Desire; it is Eros in person.”

Fragrance has the power to change your mood. If you are feeling tired, it can revive you, or if you are feeling sad, it can lighten your mood. If you wish to relax and unwind, essential oils and the smell of certain flowers and herbs, such as Lavender, Jasmine or Sage, can work wonders.

Frances Mayes, the author of the book “Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy”, illustrates her experience of essential oils most vividly with this quote: “Anytime the perfume of orange and lemon groves wafts in the window; the human body has to feel suffused with a languorous well-being.”

Transformative Perfume

Do you need to be transported to another time in your life?

A fragrance can do this too: “Scent is our greatest, most potent form of time travel, like an arrow. It tears through layers. It finds the centre.” (Victoria Erickson)

Perfume has a transformative quality that awakens something in all of us, from admiring the precious liquid inside the beautiful bottles, to an aroma that can teleport you to a time or place in an instant. “Perfume is the key to our memories” according to Kate Lord Brown, author of the book “The Perfume Garden”.

Apart from the fact that perfume is a confidence and mood booster, it also enhances any home or occasion.

Think of a soy candle or a reed diffuser:

  • Don’t we all love how a luxuriously scented candle, its molten wax and flickering flame create magical moments in the evening?
  • What about the scent of a ‘warm welcome’ from a fragranced reed diffuser in the hallway?

Scents create something to remember: “I am very sensitive to the smells and sensations that are part of perfumes because they remind me of things: moments from the past, people, events.” (Alber Elbaz, Israeli fashion designer)

The Timeless Appeal of Coco Chanel’s Philosophy on Luxury and Style

Coco Chanel’s unique perspective on luxury and style has become a cornerstone of modern fashion philosophy. She believed that true luxury transcended mere wealth and was defined by the comfort, elegance, and refinement that enriched daily life. In one of her famous Coco Chanel quotes, she declared, “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.” This emphasis on comfort is at the heart of her designs, from the Chanel suit to Chanel No. 5 perfume, all of which continue to exude effortless sophistication.

Her insights remain just as relevant today, particularly in a world where fashion trends come and go but style endures. As she famously said, “Fashion changes, but style remains.” This best Coco Chanel quote encapsulates her belief in timeless design and personal style over fleeting trends.

Whether through her pyjama styles, the quilted handbag, or camellia brooches, Chanel’s influence on fashion is eternal, proving that elegance is always in vogue.

Coco Chanel’s Enduring Influence on Fashion and Personality

Gabrielle Coco Chanel, often referred to simply as Coco Chanel, remains a towering figure in the world of fashion. Beyond her designs, Chanel’s sharp wit and insightful quotes have left an indelible mark on how we view personal style and self-expression. She believed that every person should embrace their uniqueness, famously stating ideas that encourage individuality over conformity. Her thoughts on love were equally profound, as she often spoke of love as the driving force behind beauty and creativity. “Love is the most powerful emotion,” she once mused, a sentiment that resonates through her designs and philosophy. She also celebrated love as a transformative force, urging women to pursue it with passion, and saw love as a reflection of one’s inner strength, often linking it to the instinctive desire to be authentic.

Another Coco Chanel saying, “Fashion changes, but style endures,” teaches us the value of authenticity over following trends.

  1. Self-Confidence: Whenever you doubt yourself, remember her words, “I don’t care what you think about me. I don’t think about you at all” and carry yourself with confidence.

Gabrielle Coco Chanel’s quotes are not just about fashion but also about life’s deeper lessons. This resonates with the strong ones among us who dare to stand out, much like Chanel did when she challenged norms in a male-dominated industry. Her resilience reminds us of other historical figures like Winston Churchill, who also faced adversity with unwavering determination. Chanel’s advice to never settle for the second best thing in life pushes us to aim higher, whether in love or ambition, as she believed settling was akin to admitting defeat.

Blooming Tradition – Visiting The Flower Bazaars Of China Before Chinese New Year

Pairfum London Chinese Flower Bazaar

Introduction:

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a time of immense cultural significance. It is an occasion marked by feasting, family reunions, and elaborate traditions. Among these cherished practices, one event stands out for its vibrant charm and sensory appeal: the Flower Bazaar or Lunar New Year Fair.

This delightful marketplace is a bustling hub of activity in the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, as families flock to buy flowers and decorations that symbolise prosperity, happiness, and good fortune.

Pairfum London Chinese Flower Bazaar Hong Kong

A Fragrant Tradition: The History of Flower Bazaars

The tradition of visiting flower markets before the New Year has deep historical roots. Originating during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, these bazaars became a way for people to usher in the new year with beauty and fragrance. Flowers were seen not only as decorations but also as messengers of luck and vitality, each bloom carrying its unique symbolism. Over the centuries, the tradition evolved, blending ancient beliefs with modern festivities.

In cities like Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, these markets have become an essential part of the New Year celebrations. Streets are transformed into open-air displays of floral splendour, with vendors showcasing their best blooms and wares. The Flower Bazaar is not just a shopping destination but also a social gathering place where families create memories, admire artistry, and revel in the festive atmosphere.

The Flowers at the Flower Bazaar that Speak the Language of Fortune

Flowers play a starring role in the Chinese New Year tradition, each selected for its auspicious meaning. Here are some of the most popular blooms you’ll find at the Flower Bazaar, along with the delightful scents they bring into the home:

  1. Peach Blossoms (桃花)
Peach blossoms symbolise romance and prosperity. Their light, sweet fragrance fills the air with a delicate charm. Typically displayed in tall vases, these blooms are placed in living rooms or near windows to attract good luck and love.
  2. Plum Blossoms (梅花)
Known for their resilience and elegance, plum blossoms represent perseverance and renewal. Their subtle, spicy fragrance adds a sophisticated note to any home. They are often arranged on dining tables or entryways to signify strength and endurance.
  3. Chrysanthemums (菊花)
Chrysanthemums are favoured for their association with longevity and joy. Their crisp, slightly herbal scent brings a sense of freshness. These flowers are placed in study areas or family rooms to inspire vitality and well-being.
  4. Narcissus (水仙)
A symbol of prosperity and talent, the narcissus is prized for its enchanting, honeyed fragrance. It is a centrepiece on dining tables or in the kitchen, where its uplifting aroma enhances the festive spirit.
  5. Orchids (兰花)
Orchids are revered for their elegance and association with fertility and refinement. Their soft, floral scent infuses the home with serenity. Orchids are commonly displayed in bedrooms or meditation areas to encourage harmony.
  6. Kumquat Trees (金桔)
Though not traditionally a flower, kumquat trees are a vibrant addition to the Flower Bazaar. The citrusy scent of their leaves and fruit is refreshing and energising. These trees are placed near doorways or balconies to invite wealth and success.

The Symphony of Scents at the Flower Bazaar

The Flower Bazaar is not only a visual feast but also a symphony of scents. As you meander through the crowded lanes, your senses are enveloped by the mingling fragrances of fresh blooms, citrus fruits, and aromatic herbs. Vendors might be seen spraying water over their displays, intensifying the scent of petals and leaves.

There is the light sweetness of peach blossoms, the earthy aroma of potted chrysanthemums, and the zesty tang of kumquat trees. Adding to this are stalls selling sandalwood incense and traditional oils, which waft through the air, blending with the natural fragrances to create an intoxicating experience. It is an olfactory journey that perfectly complements the festive atmosphere.

Decorating the Home: Placement and Meaning

Once the flowers are chosen, their placement in the home is just as important as their symbolism. Here are some traditional ways families incorporate their floral treasures:

  • Living Room: Tall vases filled with peach or plum blossoms create a welcoming focal point. Their bright hues and elegant branches are thought to attract prosperity and happiness.
  • Dining Area: A bowl of blooming narcissus or a pot of chrysanthemums often takes centre stage. These arrangements are believed to invite abundance and unity during family meals.
  • Doorways and Entrances: Kumquat trees and potted orchids are placed near the front door to greet guests with symbols of wealth and refinement.
  • Windowsills: Brightly coloured blooms like orchids or daffodils adorn windowsills, allowing sunlight to enhance their beauty and fragrance while symbolising a bright future.
  • Bedrooms: Orchids are commonly placed in bedrooms to foster tranquillity and connection, aligning with their symbolism of fertility and grace.

A Feast for the Senses and the Soul

The Flower Bazaar’s appeal lies in its ability to engage all the senses. Beyond the visual and olfactory delights, there is the tactile pleasure of handling delicate petals and robust stems. The cheerful hum of bargaining fills the air as vendors and buyers engage in lively negotiations. Traditional music often accompanies the scene, adding a rhythmic backdrop to the festivities.

Families leave the bazaar laden with treasures, from fragrant flowers to festive decorations, all imbued with the promise of a prosperous year ahead. Children carry tiny potted plants, their excitement palpable as they learn about the symbolism of each bloom. For the older generations, the visit is a nostalgic journey, a bridge between past and present.

We expect that one other product bought at the market will be home fragrances, and in particular Perfumed Candles and Reed Diffusers to fragrance the home with wonderfully floral fragrances. We invite you to explore our Luxuriously Natural Fragranced Candles and Natural Reed Diffusers to create your own Flower Bazaar at home.

The Enduring Legacy of the Flower Bazaar

As Chinese New Year approaches, the Flower Bazaar remains a testament to the enduring power of tradition. It celebrates the beauty of nature, the richness of culture, and the unbreakable bonds of family. Each flower, with its unique scent and symbolism, tells a story of hope and renewal.

In these bustling markets, amid the sea of colours and fragrances, lies the essence of the Spring Festival. It is a reminder that the simplest pleasures—the scent of a flower, the laughter of loved ones, the promise of a fresh start—are often the most profound.

So, as you prepare to celebrate the Chinese New Year, why not embrace the tradition of the Flower Bazaar? Let its blooms fill your home with fragrance, joy, and a touch of fortune.

What Is The Definition Of A Niche Perfume?

Introduction

In the post we explain the 4 x elements of the Definition of a Niche Perfume.

We are frequently asked:

  • “What is Niche Fragrance?”
  • “Define Niche Perfume for Me?”, or
  • “What is a Niche Perfumery House?”
Pairfum Eau De Parfum Back Gold London Company Background definition of a niche perfume

What Is Niche Fragrance?

This is how we define niche perfume:

A niche perfume is a type of fragrance that is produced in smaller quantities and sold through speciality boutiques or online retailers, as opposed to mass-produced fragrances sold in department stores.

We find that Niche, Indie, Boutique and Artisan Perfumes are synonyms, broadly speaking. In other words, they all describe something very similar. ‘Indie’ is a term more popular in the USA whereas ‘Artisan’ is typically used in France. In our opinion, Craft Fragrances describe scents that tend to be created and manufactured by hand in home studies by hobbyist who are usually not perfumers but enthusiasts or experts at blending essential oils, e.g. Aromatherapists.

Definition Of A Niche Perfume

The following are the features that form the Definition of a Niche Perfume:

  1. an in-house perfumer
  2. no mass marketing
  3. limited quantity & availability
  4. unusual fragrance notes

In-House Perfumer

A distinguishing feature of Niche Perfumery Houses is that they have an in-house perfumer compared with the mass-produce fragrances by Couture, Prestige or Design Houses. These outsource the creation of their perfumes to third party perfumers or/and fragrance houses. Hence, the existence of an in-house perfume is a key part of the Definition of a Niche Perfume.

‘Personal Connection’ is a new term that we hear being used to define Niche Perfumes and it means that a ‘personal connection’ exists between the in-House perfumer / owner of the perfume house and its customers. For example, in the case of Pairfum London, our in-House Perfumer, Huib Maat, is continuously in contact with our customers.

No Mass Marketing

The lack of mass advertising for niche fragrances helps to maintain their exclusivity and often contributes to the perception of higher value. The absence of TV advertising and celebrity models is another key part of the Definition of a Niche Perfume. The awareness of Artisan Fragrances is typically spread through ‘word-of-mouth’.

Limited Availability

The term “niche” refers to the fragrance’s exclusivity and uniqueness, as opposed to the more widely available, mainstream fragrances.

When we see established Niche, Indie, Boutique or Artisan Fragrances in the Duty-Free at the Airport, we question whether these qualify as ‘Niche’ as their availability is no longer exclusive or limited.

Unusual Fragrance Notes

The perfumers and perfumery houses behind niche fragrances typically have more creative freedom to experiment with unusual notes, accords and ingredients, resulting in fragrances that are often more distinctive and personal than their mass-produced counterparts.

Niche / Boutique Perfumes often feature rare and high-quality ingredients, and their scents can be very complex and layered.

Boutique perfumes are typically more expensive than mass-produced fragrances due to the higher quality, natural or rarer ingredients used and the smaller production runs.

It is common knowledge within the industry, that when an Indie Perfume Brand is bought over by one of the Conglomerates, that the same team which develop the ‘Prestige’ brand’s perfumes, now also develop the fragrances launched under the ‘Niche’ brand. In other words, it is to be expected that the fragrances become less unique, creative or avantgarde.

Evolution?

Overall, niche perfumes are an alternative for people looking for a more personal and unique fragrance experience, as opposed to the more widely available and commercial options from Couture, Prestige and Designer labels.

Would you agree or do you believe it has evolved?

We actually believe that Niche Perfumes can nowadays be subdivided into three groups:

Conglomerate

The success and rise of Niche Fragrances has seen many know Niche Fragrance house being bought by the global conglomerates in Perfumery. Here are a few examples:

  • LVMH: Acqua di Parma, Celine, Maison Francis Kurkdjian
  • L’Oreal: Aesop, Atelier Cologne, Kiehl’s
  • Puig: Byredo, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Penhaligon’s
  • Estee Lauder: Aerin, By Kilian, Frederic Malle, Jo Malone London, Le Labo, Tom Ford
  • Kering: Creed

Investments

The recent purchase of Creed by Kering from an investment bank has shown a lucrative business model to various financiers around the world. Here are examples of Indie Perfumes owned by financiers and the question arises whether / when these will be taken over by a conglomerate:

  • Manzanita: Diptyque, Malin+Goetz
  • Neo Investments: Tom Dixon, Miller Harris, Ladurée
  • Various: Parfums de Marly

Privately Owned

Here are a few examples of Niche Perfumery Houses that are still privately owned, in many cases by the in-House perfumer:

  • UK: Pairfum London, Floris, Roja Dove, Ormonde Jayne
  • France: Parfums d’Orsay, Fragonard, Le Couvent, Parfums de Nicolaï, Fragrance Du Bois
  • Italy: Xerjoff
  • USA: Bond no. 9
  • GCC: Amouage

Evolving Definitions and the Allure of Niche

While the core principles of niche perfumery remain, the landscape has certainly evolved. Today, niche perfume is more than just exclusivity and high-quality ingredients. It’s a statement of individuality, an exploration of artistic expression, and a rejection of the mass-produced, celebrity-endorsed fragrances dominating the mainstream.

The definition of niche perfume is expanding to include a focus on sustainability, ethical sourcing, and transparency. Many niche brands are committed to using natural, organic ingredients and minimizing their environmental impact. This resonates with the conscious consumer, seeking products that align with their values.

Moreover, niche perfumery has become a platform for diverse voices and perspectives. Niche perfumers from around the world are pushing boundaries, drawing inspiration from their cultural heritage, personal experiences, and unique artistic visions. This has led to a surge in exciting new niche scents, defying traditional fragrance categories and captivating a global audience.

In contrast to mainstream perfumes, which often rely heavily on synthetic ingredients and mass-market appeal, niche fragrance embraces complexity, nuance, and the beauty of imperfection. Niche brands are not afraid to challenge the status quo, offering unique fragrances that spark conversation and evoke emotions.

The Rise of Niche: A Shift in the Fragrance Industry

The growing popularity of niche perfume signifies a shift in the fragrance industry. Fragrance enthusiasts are increasingly seeking unique scents that tell a story and reflect their personality. This has led to a boom in niche fragrance brands, offering a diverse range of olfactory experiences beyond the confines of mainstream perfumery.

Niche perfume houses, like Atelier Cologne and Pairfum London, are leading the way, championing creativity, craftsmanship, and a commitment to quality. They offer an alternative to the mass-produced fragrances that dominate department store shelves, catering to a discerning clientele who crave authenticity and individuality.

Beyond Perfume: Exploring the World of Niche

The concept of niche extends beyond the realm of personal fragrance. Home fragrance, candles, and diffusers are also experiencing a surge in niche offerings, catering to those who seek unique and sophisticated scents for their living spaces.

Similarly, the world of luxury is embracing the niche movement, with luxury brands offering exclusive, limited-edition products that appeal to a discerning clientele. This reflects a broader cultural shift towards valuing craftsmanship, authenticity, and personal expression over mass-produced consumerism.

Examples of successful ‘Niche’ products can be found in fashion (clothing, shoes), spirits (whisky, gin) and wines, dairy (cheeses), leather goods, handbags, vacations, sport equipment (bicycles) and many other industries.

Premium brands often use high-quality waxes like soy, beeswax, or coconut wax, which burn cleaner and longer than traditional paraffin wax. The wicks are typically made from cotton or wood, ensuring an even burn and minimal soot.

Expert boutique perfumery houses and artisan candle makers blend sophisticated fragrances using essential oils and natural ingredients, creating complex scent profiles that can transform the ambiance of any space.

The main criteria for assessing the quality of a candle are:

  • wax: is the wax petroleum derived or from a sustainable source?
  • clean burn: does the candle soot and smoke when it is burning?
  • strong fragrance: does the fragrance fill the room? Is the odour of soot or smoke perceivable?
  • beautiful appearance: is the wax beautifully white or creamy? Is the surface smooth?
  • no drip: does the taper candle drip?
  • type of wick: is made from cotton? Does it contain a metal filament?

The type of wax that a candle is made from, is often overlooked by most of us and yet for luxury candles, the wax has a significant impact on their quality.

Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax is the most common type of wax. It produces more smoke and soot than other waxes. Contains ‘toluen’ and ‘benzene’ which are known carcinogenes. On the other hand, it is the cheapest of all waxes, easy to dye and very suitable for making highly scented candles.

Beeswax Candles

Beeswax has a natural honey-like aroma and emits a warm glow when lit because of its colour, i.e. reduces the need to add dyes to the wax. This means they are a good choice for those with allergies or looking for a natural wax. Due to its high melting point, beeswax is also less likely to drip.

Soy Wax

Soy wax is natural and renewable. Essentially, it is the sustainable choice. The wax is made of soybean oil, which is biodegradable but also burns cleanly for extended periods of time. Any spills can be easily washed away with soap and hot water.

Other Waxes

There are many other types of wax that are very suitable for perfume candles: palm, sunflower, coconut, flower wax, avocado, stearin, …

Their popularity varies between regions, e.g. stearin is the most popular wax in Scandinavia, and candle formats, e.g. stearin is more popular for taper candles and soy wax is mainly used in container candles.

Superior Materials

Luxury candles are distinguished by the superior materials from which they are made:

  • The best luxury candles use natural waxes like soy or beeswax. These waxes burn cleaner and longer than traditional paraffin wax.
  • Essential oils and natural fragrances provide authentic scents that enrich your environment.
  • Eco-friendly wicks, made from cotton or wood, ensure a steady flame without harmful emissions.

Choosing candles with these features enhances both your well-being and the ambience of your space.

Exploring Captivating Scent Profiles

Fragrance is at the heart of the luxury candle experience.

Each fragrance profile creates a different atmosphere. Floral notes like rose and jasmine bring tranquillity and romance. Citrus scents such as lemon and grapefruit invigorate and refresh. Woody aromas like cedar and sandalwood add warmth and depth.

Understanding these profiles helps you select candles that complement your mood and décor.

The Scent Throw

Is the ‘Scent-Throw’ strong enough so that the fragrance of the candle fills the room?

When it comes to the fragrance of luxury candles, there are a few things that should be considered

  • the bigger the space, the more candles are required or the larger the candles should be
  • a candle wax with higher meltpoint will result in a stronger fragrance
  • the more perfume mixed into the wax, the stronger and longer lasting the fragrance. Cheap candles frequently only scent the uppermost layer of the candle.

All luxury candle waxes have a saturation point, meaning that there is a certain limit to the amount of fragrance that can be added due to safety concerns, i.e. if the wax is oversaturated, the flame may ignite the essential oils that seep out of the wax.

The fragrance of luxury scented candles is a very personal experience and preference, which will invoke different feelings and memories in each of us. There are infinite combinations of fragrances so we invite our customers to explore the ones that appeal to them.

Wax Shrinks!

As wax cools and solidifies, it shrinks and cracks or holes appear.

A second layer of wax, i.e. like a top coat, is normally applied in order to create a smooth finish.

Some companies only scent the wick or use scented wax during the second refill, which is why you may stop smelling the candle after the top layer of the wax has burned off.

For a candle fragrance that lasts, we include the maximum amount of concentrated perfume oil that is technically possible and we fragrance the entire wax, i.e. from top to bottom and not just the ‘top coat’.

How To Maintain Luxury Candles Scented Perfumed Fragrance

Choosing the Perfect Luxury Candle for Your Home

Selecting the right luxury candle involves considering more than just the scent. Think about the room size, décor, and the mood you wish to evoke.

For a serene bedroom atmosphere, opt for calming scents like lavender or chamomile. In the living room, invigorating fragrances such as citrus or eucalyptus can energize the space.

The candle’s design also plays a role; an elegantly crafted candle can serve as a decorative piece that complements your interior style.

Sustainability in Luxury Candle Production

As environmental awareness grows, many luxury candle brands are embracing sustainable and ethical production practices.

This includes using natural, organic and/or biodegradable materials, eco-friendly packaging, and sourcing ingredients responsibly.

By choosing candles from these brands, you not only enjoy a superior product but also contribute to environmental conservation efforts.

Supporting sustainable luxury candles is a step toward a more eco-conscious lifestyle without compromising on quality or aesthetics.

How To Maintain Luxury Candles

When the perfect candle has been found, only half of the work is complete. Even the best scented candle still needs some tender love and care to ensure it performs at its best.

Tip 1: The First Lighting Of The Luxury Candle

This is possibly the most important time in any candle’s life and should dedicate a little of your time to it. You need to watch until the wax starts to melt and form a ‘pool’ up to the edges of its container. You should not extinguish the candle before it has developed a full meltpool, i.e. the entire surface of the wax has turned molten.

This prevents ‘tunnelling’ or the phenomenon where the flame ‘tunnels’ down into the wax without ever forming a full meltpool. Tunneling eventually leads to a candle that extinguishes itself before the entire wax has been used up.

If possible, a luxury candle should be extinguished with a sniffer as it will help to ensure that the wick stays centred.

As a result, whenever the candle is lit again in the future, it will burn cleanly down the sides of its glass container.

Tip 2: Trim The Wick

When you buy luxury candles, it is very likely that the candle maker would have trimmed the wick for the first lighting  If this is not the case, trim the wick to 4mm and again after each burn.

Trimming the wick down to 4mm will ensure that your luxury candles will last longer but there will also be less soot in the wax than if the wick was longer.

As well as avoiding soot, in order to avoid flaring, we recommend keeping the liquid wax free of wick trimmings or match ends.

Tip 3: Good Luxury Candle Burning Habits

Avoid burning the last centimetre of wax in order to protect the candle container, e.g. it might crack, and the surface that you have placed your candle on.

Wicks can become deformed and develop ‘mushrooms’, if they are burned too long. We recommend not burning a luxury candle for more than four hours at a time.

Summary: Pairfum London Luxury Perfume & Soy Candles

One of the advantages of our Pairfum Luxury Candles is that they have multiple wicks and they are made of cotton (or linen). High-quality luxury candles use finely woven cotton wicks, free from metal filaments to keep them upright. Metal filaments have been proven to be carcinogenic.

Instead, seek out candles that use wick with either a special weave or paper filaments to keep them upright while they are burning.

Our candles tend to release a beautifully intense fragrance and provide a wonderful glow. The burning time of a candle depends on the quality and size of the candle. The longer burning time of our luxury candles is a sign of quality over cheaper candles.
