About Olympia, London

Today, Olympia is an exhibition centre and it is located in West Kensington, London (UK).

It opened originally in 1886 as the National Agricultural Hall and covers an area of 19,325m². The Grand Hall is covered by one single span of iron and glass, letting a large amount of light to flood into the building. This makes it an unusual but very pleasant exhibition space for wholesale tradefairs, compared with most other venues, such as the NEC in Birmingham, which are entirely covered-in.

For those travelling by train (or not wishing to use their cars), the nearest railway station is Kensington (Olympia) which is both a London Overground station and a stop on the District line of the London Underground.

Invictus Paco Rabanne for men

TOP 10 MALE FRAGRANCES IN 2014 (FRANCE)

Welcome to the count down for the Top Ten best selling Men’s fragrances in France in 2014 or as we like to say “Top for the Pop’s”.

A new Best-Seller !

And the winner of the crown of the ‘best-selling male fragrance of 2014’ in France is … ‘Invictus’ by Paco Rabanne. Hermes, Chanel and Hugo Boss also enjoyed a successful year and achieved very good sales.

‘1 Million’ (Paco Rabanne) lost its place at the top to ‘Invictus’ by Paco Rabanne. It is surprising how quickly this fragrance entered the top 10 to become its best-seller, considering it was launched in 2013. Traditionally, the male fragrance market does not see such rapid changes.

[sliderpro id=”18″]

Stabilised Market

Overall, the sales value of male fragrances in France was roughly the same as the previous year, with a small decline of 0.6%. However, this was a much smaller decline than the male fragrance market by -1.7% in 2013. In terms of the quantity of perfume bottles sold, the decrease was more noticeable, i.e. –  4%. Essentially, this shows that loss in volume was offset for the majority through sales of higher value products or higher prices for existing fragrances.

In 2014, the crown for the most successful new launch went to ‘L’Homme Idéal’ (Guerlain), a woody, oriental and gourmand scent.

Worthy of note is how Chanel and Hermes were able to achieve higher prices with their perfumes.

The sales of Dior Homme ‘Intense’ were nearly the equivalent of Dior ‘Homme’. Similarly, Hermes increased it sales thanks to the successful launch of Terre d’Hermès Eau Très Fraîche’, a more citrussy version, presumably launched to compete with ‘Eau Sauvage’ (Dior), as both can be described as classic & fresh themes.

[sliderpro id=”20″]

Woods are dominant !

Of the top 10 perfumes sold based on the number of bottles, it can clearly be seen that the most popular olfactory group amongst consumers is woody, with half of those on the list being of that variety. ‘Woody-Spicy’ were 3 of these 5. ‘Oriental’ were 2 of these 10 fragrances. Fragrances directions traditionally associated with male fragrances in France, ‘citrus’ and ‘aquatic’, were only represented by one fragrance each.

All of the male fragrances in France contain ‘citrus’ in their top notes, with ‘grapefruit’ and ‘bergamot’ dominating. Worthy of note is also the inclusion of ‘peppermint’ in a 3 top notes !

In the heart of the accords, dominate ‘woody’ and ‘spicy’ ingredients, with ‘cinnamon’ being present in 4 perfumes.

In terms of base notes, ‘patchouli’ can be found in 6 out of 10 accords and ‘cedar’ in 7 out of them.

Very few ingredients associated with the ‘gourmand’ trend, can be found within the Top 10 Male fragrances.

Even though one has traditionally associated the colour ‘blue’ with male fragrances, 6 out of 10 perfumes were a yellow or golden colour, whilst only 3 out of the 10 were blue.

The top two fragrances were launched within the last 5 years and the 3rd & 4th placed fragrances were brought to the market in the middle of the last decade. The fragrances in 5th and 6th place were launched approx. 10 years before that. The oldest two fragrances are both from the mid sixties, 1966 and 1965.

What can be expected in 2015 ?

For 2015, ‘Invictus’ is in a strong position to maintain its leading position, simply because a large number of consumers have not yet discovered this fragrance, just as ‘Terre d’Hermès’ still has room for growth. ‘Bleu de Chanel’ increased its sales by over 18%, especially through the successful launch of its ‘eau de parfum’ version. Boss ‘Bottled’ expects that its new ‘Intense’ version will lead to success in 2015.

The above demonstrates that male fragrance market is nowadays more volatile and receptive to new product.

Couture Perfume for your home

If you like these couture fragrances and would like your home to be inspired by these trends in France, then the PAIRFUM Collection is for you. We are a boutique perfumery house that specialises in bringing your favourite fragrances into the home environment.

Here at PAIRFUM we create perfume trends by bringing the outstanding fragrance ingredients in your home.

To experience this for yourself, you should discover one of our luxury scented candles, natural reed diffuser fragrances or room perfume sprays.

For example, PAIRFUM’s ‘Rich Spices’ was created around the ‘woody-spicy’ accord that is so dominat in French men’s fragrances. Equally, ‘Cedar Noir’ is based on the woody and ambery notes you find in ‘Invictus’. Alternatively, our ‘SPA’ perfume shares elements with the accord you find in ‘Acqua di Gio’. We developed ‘Bergamot & White Tea’ to be a modern interpretation of ‘Eau Sauvage’.

Top 10 Female Fragrances in 2014 (France)

As the first of the sales figures for 2014 are coming in, we can see already in France that it brought a few surprises but equally that some trends are not disappearing yet. The market intelligence presented in this article originates from the ‘NPD Group’ and it was published by ChallengeS, a French magazine.

Gourmand Notes dominate !

While in France the classic scents are suffering in the market, the Gourmand trend continues to charm female consumers and has not yet been overtaken by the ‘new woods’ and ‘chypres’, despite this being forecast.

The crown of the ‘best selling female fragrance’ in France goes to Lancôme’s ‘La Vie est Belle’, a sweet accord with caramel and cotton candy, with J’adore by Dior coming in second. And yet we also see a powdery floral note and a woody accords with hints of incense.

2014 was a better year for perfume than the previous ones. Indeed, after several years of decline, the market grew by 0.2%. Women’s fine fragrances fared the best, with a 0.6% rise in value. However, when analysing the volumes, the market shows a 3% decrease in the number of product units sold. Hence, the progress in the market can be attributed to higher prices.

Beyond the excellent results of La Vie est Belle (Guerlain), L’Oreal succeeded with the best launch of 2014 with Black Opium d’Yves Saint Laurent.

In this list, the sales of Opium increased because the sales of Black Opium are included in the figure. La Petite Robe Noire by Guerlain retained its position in the top 3 thanks to the inclusion of La petite Robe Noire Couture in its figures  proved to be the second most successful launch of the year. Miss Dior maintained its position in the top 10 due to the success of Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet.

Black Opium made a remarkable entry into the top 10. This augurs well for an entry into the top 5, or even top 3 in 2015.  Si d’Armani achieved the biggest progressed compared to the previous year, with an increase of more than 75%. The fragrance Repetto saw a noteworthy increase of more than 30% !

Trends

These figures confirm that the Gourmand fragrances are still of the greatest interest to consumers. Despite the claims by forecasting agencies last year, there are few signs that the gourmand trend is giving way to Woody and Chypre Accords.

Another observation is that the classics are struggling. For example, despite a new advertising campaign Angel’s place in the market declined. Chanel No. 5 has been overtaken by Coco Mademoiselle. The new advertising campaign with Gisele Bündchen and the relaunching of l’Eau Première therefore had no real effect on the declining sales of Chanel No. 5.

The market is dominated by Oriental scents (1 perfume in 2 in value terms), followed by Floral scents, closely followed in third by Chypre. Of the top 10, 6 were Oriental, 2 were Floral and 2 were Chypre. The rise of Chypre-Fruity is noticeable.

Delving a little deeper into the notes themselves, Bergamot is the most popular top note, as it is included in half of the top 10 French perfumes of 2014. Top notes containing Red Fruits (in various forms) are worthy of note. Rose & Jasmin combination are not surprisingly, still very popular in the heart of accords. Vanilla can be found in 9 out of the 10 perfumes as a base note, which demonstrates its continuing popularity with consumers. Patchouli, a woody note, features heavily, with its inclusion in 7 out of the top 10 fragrances – most commonly as a base note.

In tough economic times, consumers continue to prefer new products. Whilst the number of fragrances launched continues to increase, the market generally remains stagnant with little or no growth. In a saturated market, the perfume houses are reviving their products, either in terms of products/fragrance, presentation/image or the purchase experience itself.

For example, PAIRFUM’s ‘Black Orchid’ shares a lot of ingredients with ‘La Vie Est Belle’. Equally, ‘Orangerie Blossoms’ has been created with the accord that ‘J’Adore’ is based on and our ‘White Sandalwood’ compares well with ‘Coco Mademoiselle’.

For us here at PAIRFUM, the stand-out fragrance in France was this year:

‘La Petite Robe Noire Couture’ (eau de parfum, Guerlain)

La Petite Robe Noire Couture Guerlain for women

In the USA, our personal winner is this year: ‘Invictus’ PACO RABANNE (Puig)

What is your favourite fragrance of the year ?

Fuel for Life Homme Diesel man irresistible

Can a Fragrance make a Man irresistible to a Women ?

Here at PAIRFUM it is our opinion, that wearing a beautiful fragrance will probably not harm the chances of making a man irresistible !

Following the recent article in The Telegraph ‘Revealed: the aftershave that turns women on‘, they have just published a further piece about the effects of fragrance ingredients on humans: ‘The truth about ‘sexy’ male fragrances.’

Here are a summary of the article and our thoughts on the subject of making a man irresistible with perfume:

Sandalwood

Andosterone is an intoxicating pheromone found in the underarm sweat of men. It is believed to resemble sandalwood, a very trendy ingredient in men’s fragrances.

Here are a collection of perfumes for men which contain sandalwood.

Heliotrope / Heliotropin

Heliotrope & heliotropin have an almond-like, creamy, edible character and a major component in vanilla. It is a note that typically appeals equally to both men and women. Vanilla has a comforting effect on people and makes you feel relaxed.

Below is a selection of fragrances with heliotrope to make a man irresistible.

Lavender

The researchers at “The Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation” in Chicago claim to have discovered that lavender may have the same effect on Men as ‘Viagra’ ! Will it work better than “viagra”? We very much doubt it but who knows !! as the Journalist for the Telegraph rightly asked how do they know this??

This is a range of lavender fragrances for irresistible men.

Home Fragrance

Now, … what about this the synergy between the perfume you wear and your home fragrance?

Here at Pairfum London we have a few fragrances that we would like to suggest that will work in harmony with the masculine Sandalwood, Lavender or Heliotrope perfumes we mentioned above.

Here they are the fragrance to make the pad or apartment of a man irresistible:

“Linen & Lavender”: The fresh breeze of aromatic Lavender, Bergamot, Mandarin and Noroli Oil create the sensation of crisp & clean Linen. Airy and Watery Ozonic notes radiate from a transparent floral heart of Rosemary, Basil, Chamomile and Lily of the Valley. The fond is infused with soft, enveloping Musks, Amber and Cedar.

“White Sandalwood”: A Creamy Sandalwood accord with a hint of Chypre ! It includes top notes of Neroli and Lychee, a floral heart of White Jasmine, Violet and Cistus Labdanum, and a fond of sun-bleached Cedar, Patchouli, Musk and Tonka Bean.

“Anis & Black Vanilla”: This beautifully soft ‘Noir’ fragrance opens with top notes of Anise and Liquorice to add mystique to a heart built around the Vanilla and Almond nuances of Heliotrope and Powdery Violet. Sandalwood and Amber add warmth to the fond.

Does it work ?

“Duke University Medical Centre” in North Carolina has indeed been able to demonstrate in a study that wearing perfume does lift our mood.

The “Kinsey Institute” in America found in their experiment that women who smelled a male fragrance whilst visualising an erotic experience were more aroused than the control group who were simply exposed to a neutral odour. In this study various men’s fragrances were used and it proved that any men’s fragrance will have this effect.

Now, … will you become irresistible and enjoy an unforgettable night, if you wear “Joop! Homme”, have a PAIRFUM ‘white sandalwood’ candle burning on the table and a PAIRFUM reed diffuser in ‘Linen & Lavender’ in the bedroom ?

Probably, … but it is our view, that perfume is entirely personal and subjective. We believe it is more about how it suit you and make you feel, rather than any pre-programmed effects, that may have been proven.

Woman Man Embrace Kiss Love Perfume

Typically, these pieces of research are conducted with a single ingredient at an un-naturally high dosage within a laboratory condition.

A couture perfume on the other contains between 50 – 200 ingredients, in various small dosages.

Our nose and sense of smell are in close proximity to our brain and related to the emotional centre of the brain. Consequently, some fragrances can trigger strong memories or emotions which are entirely personal: Lavender might remind you of your grandmother or Bergmot of a recent vacation in Italy.

We would expect the emotional effect of these memories to easily override any scientifically proven result of ‘heliotrope’ or other ingredients. These emotional effects will obviously be different for the wearer and the opposite sex, which is why it may not come as a surprise that a fragrance you love to wear may be unattractive or even off-putting to somebody else.

Is this so bad though ? We believe not, as you must both love the fragrance in your home or the perfume that is radiating from your partner. Perfume will always have an effect on you and the world around you: your partner, your home, your office, your friends … Fragrance will always be your personal secret weapon.

Fragrance Woman Man Kiss

Perfume is typically one of the last things we apply before we leave our home (both for work and to party). When you wear a perfume that you love and that is right for the moment, you immediately feel better about yourself and the world around you. Inevitably you will radiate happiness, positivety and confidence and spring to your step.

We suspect that for women it is not just the fragrance which is important but the effort & intent you put into charming her. Wearing a perfume is allows her to sense this and maybe, just maybe it is also your aphrodisiac for her.

Petition to ban pesticides that kill bees

Support the ban of bee-killing pesticides

Do you remember hearing about toxic pesticides wiping out bees?

A respected group of scientists concluded this week that pesticides not only kill bees but that they wreak “havoc” with other insects and plants in the countryside too. [1]

Back in 2013, member of 38 Degrees worked with other campaigners across Europe to get this type of pesticides banned within the EU. However, there is now a chance that the ban may be lifted this coming December. [2]

Here in the UK, we will have an election in four weeks time and we would like to ensure now that the next government will continue to protect the bee population. All of the political parties will shortly publish their manifestos. [3]

We urge you to sign a petition to get a promise from each party to protect the bees. A large petition should ensure that every party will include in their manifesto a promise to ban bee-killing pesticides in the UK forever.

Bees pollinate our fruit (apples, strawberries, tomatoes,…), vegetables (cucumbers, cauliflowers, onions, cabbages, broccoli, carrots,…) and many other crops. [4] Without bees, our world would not survive for very long!

Bees don’t have a voice ! However, the members & supporters of 38 Degrees have successfully fought on their behalf, e.g. for an EU ban. [5]

Here at PAIRFUM we have always passionately supported the bee population worldwide through purchasing bee hives for families in Africa. Each one of the beehives we buy every year, feeds one family, year after year !

Hence, we urge all of fans of PAIRFUM to sign this petition by “38 Degrees”.

Without bees we will no longer have any natural perfumes. There would not be any flowers, herbs or other plants from which to extract natural, essential oils.

Perfume can attract the opposite sex !

Here are the links to two very interesting articles, one in The Telegraph  and in Science Daily, about the perfume ingredient 'hedione' and the 'pheromone effect' it can trigger:

For the first time, researchers have found that a perfumery ingredient, 'Hedione', can trigger ‘sex-specific activation patterns’ in the nasal tissue directly linked to the brain of humans. It activates the pheromone receptor VN1R.

“These results constitute compelling evidence that a pheromone effect different from normal olfactory perception indeed exists in humans,” states Prof Hanns Hatt from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Germany.

This research was first published in the journal NeuroImage.

Below are images of some perfumes that use 'hedione' in significant quantities:

Trend: “I woke up like this” and the “no make-up look”

Selfie Trend

After Beyoncé came out with her hit single ‘Flawless,’ we now all want to wake up impeccably perfect. The hashtag #IWokeUpLikeThis can be seen everywhere in social media, often in combination with the hashtag #nofilter.

We all want to impress the world with the beauty of our ‘natural’ selfie.

To make an “I woke up like this” selfie, the author takes a selfie or photo of themselves immediately after they wake up, to catch a tired but natural and unkempt look.

This the trend has now been exaggerated with ‘parody’ versions where people style themselves to look overly messy before taking a photo with a tag of “I woke up like this”.

Top Tips for a ‘no make-up look’ and the perfect #IWokeUpLikeThis selfie

We agree that not all of those amazingly beautiful photos you see are truely natural but there has never been anything wrong with a little help from a friend, such as a few natural beauty enhancers.

Here are the key tricks and top tips to perfecting this look.

  1. Don’t snap a picture as soon as you get up. Brush your teeth first ! Now you can smile with confidence in your photo.
  2. The real secret is super minimal makeup but do apply a little moisturizer. You’re still makeup free, but have made your skin look a little ‘dewy’.
  3. Spot Correct because nobody has perfect skin. With a little CC cream, you can color correct a dark spot or two. But remember we mean just a ‘little dab’, nothing more !
  4. Get Rosy with the lightest touch of blush to your cheeks. It should be barely visible, just as if you slept on the side.
  5. Stay looking messy with an unkempt bed hair head to shoot a convincing selfie. And the one thing you want a little undone that will make your ‘natural’ selfie 100% convincing is bed head hair. Aside from taming the craziest tresses, let your crown do its thang. It’ll make your photo realistic and relatable.

Catwalk Look

Now, this ‘selfie trend’ has entered the catwalk !

“I woke up like this…” is the tending look at this moment. At all of the SS & AW catwalks that have just passed, fresh-faced models were showing a ‘barely there’ glow or ‘no make-up’ look.

Obviously, this is a carefully styled look with the two key success factors being:

  • the right make-up and the application, and, more importantly,
  • a good base, which means a well looked-after face.

No amount of make-up can ever hope to recreate a well nourished skin with a fresh & rosy spring glow.

But how can everyone achieve this look every day?

‘Beauty from within’ to support the ‘no make-up look’

A great skincare regime with high quality products and the addition of supplements. It is focuses on the ‘skin health’ benefits of a combination of:

  • a good diet and lifestyle,
  • alongside the use skincare products

With supplements we refer to the trend towards ‘beauty from within’.

When it comes to skincare, the emphasis on a cleansing regime is essential. Daily cleansing should be combined with weekly and monthly treatments to target specific skin concerns and give a visible ‘refresh’.

Education

Journalists and bloggers are increasingly trying to educate consumers about their skin to get them to put in the time to improve their ‘skin health’ from the outside and ‘within’.

In particular, products are being promoted with ingredients that brighten or give an even skin tone, with immediate and tangible effects.

Look for lotions & creams with the following properties:

  • brightening
  • even skin-tone
  • blurring
  • plumbing
  • mattifying
  • tightening
  • Day Defence (DD) Creams

easter lily

What is the Fragrance of Easter ?

Many different Flowers are associated with ‘Spring’ and ‘Easter’.

The Christian Church has given some flowers a special symbolism during the celebration of Easter.

Easter Lilies are typically white, as a sign of ‘Purity’, ‘Innocence’ and ‘Goodness’. Christians use Lilies to remember Jesus Christ, and it has become a symbol of his resurrection.

Christians have given Passion Flowers many different meanings for Easter over the years. The consensus is a remembrance of Jesus dying on the cross for them.

The Christian Churches all over the world celebrate Easter with large displays of spring flowers.

The fragrance of “Fifty Shades Of Grey”

To celebrate one of the hottest film launches of the year, the PAIRFUM team would like to offer their view on the which fragrance ingredient has “Fifty Shades of Grey”.

Ambergris

In our opinion, there is only one candidate: Ambergris !

‘Ambergris’ (French) or ‘grey amber’ (Physeter Macrocephallus) is a solid and waxy material of a dull grey colour produced in the digestive system of sperm whales and then excreted. Sperm whales produce it to protect their stomachs from the beaks of the cuttlefish they swallow. Ambergris is not to be confused with ‘Fossilised Amber’, which comes from plant resin.

Ambergris is one of the most valuable raw materials in perfumery. Historically, it was found at sea and collected on beaches. Fresh ambergris is black, matured ambergis is white. Inbetween are at least “Fifty Shades of Grey”. The longer it is in contact with seawater and exposed to sunlight, the more it ages and oxidises, the more it acquires a sweet, rich and sensuous quality to becomes a strong and very valuable perfume ingredient or scent with woody, earthy/mossy, animalic, marine (algae) and powdery notes. In perfumery, ambergris is used as a fixative and to impart ‘depth’ and ‘richness’ to a fragrance accord. Nowadays it is mostly replaced by a synthetic version.

In some cultures it is regarded as an aphrodisiac and offered for sale by herbalists in the fascinating souks of Marrakesh (Morocco) and Cairo (Egypt), where is frequently stirred into cups of sweetened tea.

Historically, Ambergris has been a sought-after product and has been traded in Africa since 1000 B.C. It was seen as one of North Africa’s luxury goods (along with gold). One of the biggest pieces of ambergris ever found was auctioned in London in 1913 and weighed more than 336 pounds.
